Today was filled with some final preparations, packing and visiting. Mark came over around 10 or so – he will be house and dog sitting while we’re gone. We had most of our packing done, or so we thought, but seems like we continued to find things to take along with us. We have a dual voltage refrigerator, thanks to Mary Nordby, that plugs into an outlet in the trunk – so we have some snacks, luncheon meat, cheese and other goodies in there. Mom and Dad Ames came over with a nice collection of fruit for us to take along.
I think we finally left home around 1 o’clock, and went down to Laura and Jim’s place. We borrowed their TomTom, a gps enabled navigation device, mainly for the novelty of watching our progress in real time. It’ll also come in handy for finding addresses of places we’ll be visiting along the way – in fact it directed us to the motel we’re in now.
After leaving Laura’s, we stopped by Trav and Barb’s, where we received a care package of brownies and some reading material – Alaska magazines, one of which has an article about Tracy Arm, one of the highlights of our cruise to Alaska.
We finally hit the road in earnest sometime after 2, making a brief stop at the boat to make a final check, and also empty the boat’s ice maker contents into the collapsible ice chest we have to carry some beverages. After that, it was a pretty mundane drive down I-5, taking the 205 bypass around Portland. We arrived in Springfield a little after 7 o’clock.
We went out to dinner at the Roadhouse Inn, just down the street. It had a great atmosphere, with barrels of peanuts at the door for the patrons. We were shown to our table and given a small bucket of peanuts to munch while we perused the menu. The floor was littered with peanut shells everywhere, and we added a contribution as well. I had the St. Louis Ribs and Erin ordered the Whiskey Salmon, which I was also admiring. We planned on sharing, but ended up sharing just the ribs. The salmon was old and fishy tasting. After one bite apiece, we left the remains on the plate. We had plenty of food without it, and after telling the waitress it wasn’t edible, she removed it from our tab.
Tomorrow we’ll head off on a scenic route through the mountains and go to Crater Lake for some nice scenery. The pictures start then.
