5/27 Carlsbad, NM to Johnson City, TX

Breakfast this morning at the motel wasn’t all that great, but dinner last night was. We saw an old faded billboard on the way into town proclaiming their famous $4 steak and fries. Well, we discovered it was now the famous $5 steak and fries, but we ordered them nonetheless, one with fries, one with onion rings. They were the best steaks we’d had in a long time.

Not much to report for today, other than we headed east into Texas. The landscape gradually changed as we proceeded; first the sage brush plants became a little larger and closer together, and later they were replaced by small trees. We saw some wheat fields along the road where earlier there were just rocks and brush. We took smaller state and US highways rather than the Interstate, and passed through many small towns: Seminole, Lamesa, Ackerly, Sterling City, San Angelo, Brady, Llano – and a few others that were hardly wide spots in the road. We’re now in Johnson City, where there’s an LBJ State Park and Historical Site. We’re just north of San Antonio, and a bit west of Austin. Not far from here is Pedernales Falls State Park, which we’ll check out in the morning on our way out of town. We’ll continue on east to the Big Thicket area and possibly on into Louisiana.
