The weather was much cooler this morning, and windy as well. We left Klamath Falls around 9 o’clock or so, and headed south on hwy 39. Not much travel news to report – we just admired the scenery of hills and distant mountains as we drove. Most of our drive was through northeast California – it only took about 23 miles to get out of Oregon.
The California agricultural inspection station was open, about 20 miles into the state. We handed over a banana peel whether they wanted it or not, and confessed to having an apple. We could keep the apple because it was “store bought”.
Oregon’s highway 39 became California highway 139, and we followed it all the way to Susanville. Along the way we stopped on the shore of Eagle Lake, where the wind was blowing like crazy and churning up some waves. We continued on to Susanville, where we refueled; both the car and us, then called Bill and Dale to let them know we were a couple hours out. Dale is Erin’s cousin, and she and her husband live in Reno, in a gated community just south of town. Their house is just fabulous, with a grand entryway, high ceilings, beautiful rooms, beautiful views – and our hosts are pretty terrific too. After some visiting, we headed down to Bully’s Sports Bar for dinner. Erin had Bill’s favorite, the BBQ sandwich, and I had a shrimp basket. More visiting and story telling ensued and a good time was had by all.
The evening consisted of a demonstration of the sound system in their theater room, using the intro to the movie Top Gun, with aircraft carrier take off scenes at full volume – and it’s a 3000 watt system. Wow! We watched the 1948 version of Three Musketeers with Gene Kelly to close out the evening.
Tomorrow we’ll head south towards Death Valley.
